Day 30: Oct 20: Climax Springs to Springfield Missouri

Our visit with Malagene and John was short. We stayed one night. John had a stroke recently and had a few doctors appointments to go to. He was doing well. His speech was a little slurred but his mind was sharp. The history of the family was shared and memories came flooding back for Kasey. The old homestead was depicted on the wall. His grandparents had lived in the area and there were deep connections to the area.

Tad got another run around the property and we took another bike ride before heading out toward Springfield Missouri.

John recommended visiting the Wilson Creek Battlefield. It is a federal facility so the museum was closed, but the driving tour route was open.

The Second Major Battle of the Civil War

Wilson's Creek was the first major Civil War battle fought west of the Mississippi River, and where the first Union general was killed in action. The costly Southern victory on August 10, 1861, focused national attention on the war in Missouri.  Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield commemorates and interprets the battle within the context of the war in the Trans-Mississippi West.

Many of the old cannons were still in the fields.

The Wilson Creek Battlefield was on Wire Road and not far from Wire Road Brewery, a Harvest Host site, It was trivia night and it was crowded.

Baseball was also going on since it was the world series. Our server was very nice and had this shirt on that said "educator" and she was proud to have her picture taken.

We met a couple of other older women and asked them if they wanted to join forces for trivia. We had great conversation and as Kasey says "They were our kind of people." We did okay at trivia, but nothing to brag about.
