Day 16: 4 Point Lodging to El Tecolote March 19

We woke as we nearly always do with a cat laying on you taking in all the warmth she can from your body.

We bid goodby to Juan, who never stopped working the whole time we were there. It was sad to say goodbye to his dog Rusty as well. The 6 month old dog was very good the whole time. Not a barker and always happy to see anyone that came to visit.
We headed out of town and sought out a bank to make an exchange of money. The exchange rate has dropped. It was 20.25 pesos for each dollar but now it is 18.2
Our destination was north of La Paz to a free camping spot at a place called Tecolote. We had to go through La Paz and that is not enjoyable.

The views north of town were spectacular. La Paz is a destination resort town so there is lots happening. Lots of traffic and commerce. A major port for Baja is just north of town.
The beach had a few campers and we decided not to camp on the beach so we would have some space and privacy. We camped a bit back from the beach near the mountains. The view was great either way and the access was more than adequate. Roads and trails criss crossed the landscape. There was no order to the different paths and roads. Since it is a free area, there is no one keeping the numerous paths from developing everywhere. It seemed like chaos. It reminded me of the current political situation. When no one keeps the order, chaos ensues. The boundaries are skewed and so much confusion and damage occurs.

We took the dogs for a walk around the area and over to the beach. There were kite surfers that Tad was excited to see. The surfers were really getting some air with their acrobatic moves.
Later we went for a bike ride to check out the area and head down to a restaurant to get some wifi service. The Playa El Tecolate was the restaurant we chose. We sat down not knowing that they were about to close for the day. The prices on the menu seemed high but we wanted to get a quick check on our email and other Internet needs. Mostly Kasey wanted to be sure he did his daily Duo Lingo. When we asked for the wifi password they said it cost 100 pesos an hour. We decided it was not that important. I went to wash my hands before dinner and 2 people were on either side of the bathroom. I guess you have to pay for that too. I just wanted to wash my hands but there was no running water. The food was really good and plentiful. The bill came and shocker. 60 dollars for dinner.
We carted our leftovers back to the RV and took the dogs out before it got dsrk. So far we have talked about a lot of good things about Baja. There are some not so pleasant things about the desert environment.
We camped way away from the beach and into more brushy areas and before we knew it, the dogs had stickers everywhere on their feet. The spiny ones that hurt to pull out. So as the sun set, we sat down and brushed all the burrs out of 2 dogs. The beautiful sunset capped the day.

  1. Seems it's gotten more costly there. I like photo of Tad and kite boarders. DianaP
