I didn't sleep well. The dogs that seemingly adopted us out of no where, yipped throughout the night at anything that disturbed them. Each time that I was about to fall asleep, they would find something to complain about. On top of that, the roosters in Baja don't seem to understand that they should only crow when daybreak is approaching. Maybe something got lost in translation between the US chickens and Mexican chickens.
No worries though because we did not have any real plans for the day.
Kasey got up first and took the dogs out after starting the coffee. He wasn't gone long. Apparently, he needed to go on a walkabout a little longer, because soon, Lincoln was trying to get up and out the door because, you know, he had to go. Well, he didn't make it. It wasn't tragic though because it was an easy mess to clean up.
We took him outside to clean up any mess on him and hose off the dog throw. While we were tending to Lincoln, our uninvited guests decided to invite themselves into the motorhome. Neither Kasey or I had shut the door in our haste. Well, it didn't take long for 2 hungry puppies to clear out the dog food bowl and the cat food bowl. I have not seen those bowls that clean in quite a while. Our dogs are the type that no matter how hungry they are, they still leave a few morsels behind.
The camping spots were almost all taken and one couple had 3 dogs. The puppies seems to hang out with them as well and taking the liberty to cart off toys and leave them around the campground. They must have carted off our controller for Tad's collar because the man came over asking if it was ours and that it was over by his campsite. So just a little chaos.
We settled outside to just relax and decided to let Comet out since the puppies were asleep from their food coma. Well, the little shepherd looking puppy was soon awake and very curious, and not in a good way. He was stalking Comet. So after a few loud "No" commands, and some physical contact to divert his attention, we realized this could end badly. Most likely for the puppy because Comet's nails are sharp and I know this because....she sleeps on me and can get very content to the point of kneading.
I decided that I had had enough with these puppies. I attached one of our spare leashes to the collar of the one that had a collar, the shepherd, and away we went to town. Tad went with me to keep the puppy interested in heading in the direction of town.
Once there I found one of the tourist shops that indicated they were also an information center. I found someone willing to say that they spoke a little English. I told them that the puppy was lost and had been with us a couple of days. They said that they would take care of him, give him some water, and hope the owners spotted him. Tad and I headed toward the beach to cover our tracks. I walked in the surf so the puppy could not follow our scent. Well, mostly because walking in the surf was fun. I was proud that we were able to deliver the puppy safely to someone else. I sort of halfway expected that it would be there at camp when we got back, but the only one left was the white and brown one without a collar.
The couple with the 3 dogs had left and the uncollared puppy decided we were his family. He started to chew on our mat that we had outside. He would also jump up and sometimes wanted to play using his teeth.
Kim and Randy went to church in a town a little over an hour away. I decided to go hang out in the upper pool and take in the sites. It was nice. Great views. Kasey joined me for a while.
We went back to relaxing catching up on some work for Umpqua Watersheds and listening to KQUA. Randy and Kim came home and after a while Kim called and said whales were active in the ocean and that we could see them from the house so we went up and were treated to a show of a baby humpback whale and it's mother jumping up part way out of the water. Several snorkeling boats must have seen the activity and pretty soon 3 boats were heading to converge on the location of the whales. Some of the boats got right up next to the whales. What a thrill that must have been.
When the activity settled down, a few other guests came upstairs as well and so we departed for our site. The white puppy was still around. It was cooling off some so we decided to take a walk toward town and hope the puppy would follow us. Sure enough, he did. Once in town, the puppy was recognized by a friend of the owner. We immediately turned around to head back before he knew we were gone.
Back at camp, the campground is quiet.
Kasey had his fantasy baseball draft to attend to while I worked on my radio show, Earth In Tune. I decided to work in the fact that Mexico has it's first woman president and she is an environmentalist.
Good job dealing with the pups. I'll soon be in that pool. D
