Day 25 - March 28 - A Day of Adventure and Connection

This morning, we went for breakfast at Pelicano's Restaurant. It was a marvelous meal! I had the Pelicano, a delicious combination of red chilaquiles, ranchero steak, an egg, refried beans, and a smoked marlin quesadilla. It was fantastic!

We learned about how mostly Americans and Canadians occupy the development zones of Phase 1-3. Ironically, Phase 1 is walled off from the town with a white wall. It concerns me that people seperate themselves from each other. We are doing everything we can to connect with our Mexican hosts, learn from them and respect their history and culture and accept their help with gratitude. I am more determined than ever to become fluent in Spanish!
After breakfast, we took Lincoln and Tad for a walk, and I flew the drone around Skull Mountain, which is on the other side of the road behind The Last Place. According to our friend Pepe, the ancient people here buried their dead in caves on the face of the mountain. Mexican archaeologists have uncovered bones and artifacts from the area, some of which are displayed in a museum in La Paz. It was fascinating to see the other side of the mountain and beyond.

Later, Janice took Tad to the beach to frolic in the surf while Lincoln took a siesta contentedly back at camp. I took the drone out again, this time heading to the palapa on Kim and Randy's house to capture footage of Tad and Janice on the beach. Tad absolutely loves running in the surf and swimming. He often tries to catch crabs at the rocks by the breakers, but they always manage to scamper to the other side, leaving him in the dust. It's quite funny to watch—he’s full of so much joy. Tad also played with another couple’s three dogs on the beach.
I flew the drone about 200 yards offshore to see if I could spot any coral sharks. Leo, the manager at Cabo Pulmo, mentioned that there are thousands of them along the coast. Sure enough, I found several and managed to take a few pictures but will hopefully, be able to get some better ones tomorrow.
Randy and Kim offered to take us to La Ribera, about an hour away, to get fresh seafood for our friends from Umpqua Watersheds, who will be arriving tomorrow and staying at Kim and Randy’s house for the next seven nights. The Webbs generously donated this stay to Umpqua Watersheds through their business, Webb Core, after learning about our work during our visit last year. They’ve been so accommodating and fun to spend time with. We’re truly humbled by their generosity.

We hopped in their Jeep, Kim put on some music, and off we went. Our first stop was at a small seafood shop, Pescados y Mariscos de la Baja. Randy and Kim picked up fresh fish, scallops, shrimp, and even octopus for the week. Then we stopped at Tortilleria de Harina for some still-warm, fresh tortillas. We couldn’t resist having two or three right away—they were amazing! We also picked up a few other items at a small store before heading back to camp.

Randy decided to take the sandy beach roads back to Cabo Pulmo instead of the highway, making for a fun, windswept ride with music and even “in-flight beverages.” At one point, we nearly got stuck in the sand, but Randy put the Jeep into 4-wheel drive and powered us out. It was such a fun and exciting drive!
When we got back to Cabo Pulmo, we made a stop at a small house to buy fresh cheese. A grandmotherly woman helped me, and although no one spoke English, I was proud to have communicated successfully in Spanish.

On our way back, we stopped by the home of Jim and Abby —we had met them earlier at Kim and Randy’s. They gave us a tour of their charming home, which consists of a small main house and two casitas connected by a central plaza. Jim is an airline pilot, and he and Abbysplit their time between Healdsburg in northern California and Cabo Pulmo. Jim is also the newly elected president of the homeowners’ association here, which covers three phases of development. Phase 1 is in Cabo Pulmo proper, while Phases 2 and 3 are to the west along the dusty road we take to play pickleball.

It was another absolutely amazing day of adventure. We’re so excited for our dear friends to join us tomorrow, and we can’t wait to share this wonderful place with them.
